The Lights Are Flickering: 3 Signs You Might Have Hidden Electrical Problems
ShareThe holidays are here. It's time to start planning for your winter guests. Part of the planning should include electrical safety. The last thing you want is an electrical fire while you have guests in the house. Electrical wiring can cause serious problems in your home, especially if it's worn out, or outdated. Here are three signs that will identify potential wiring problems in your home. If you're experiencing any of these issues, you should contact an electrician as soon as possible.
Bulbs Frequently Burn Out
Light bulbs should last more than a few hours – or even a few days. If your light bulbs keep burning out, check to make sure you're using the correct wattage for your light receptacles. If you're using the wrong wattage, replace the bulbs and see if the problem continues. If the problem does continue – or you were using the correct wattage – contact an electrician. You might have a wiring problem inside the walls. It's important to note that if the problem isn't confined to just one light fixture, you might need to have your home rewired.
Circuit Breakers Tripping
Are your circuit breakers constantly tripping? If they are, you may be overloading the circuits. This is particularly true if you're using multiple power strips or extension cords. Disconnect some of the devices that you have plugged in throughout your home. If the problem continues, you may need to have your circuit breaker inspected by an electrician. Also, if you don't have enough outlets in your home to power your devices, you should talk to your electrician about having additional outlets installed in your home.
Scorched or Melted Outlets
While you're plugging in your holiday decorations, look at your outlets. Scorched or melted outlets are a sign that they're overheating while in use. Unfortunately, if your outlets become too hot, you could have an electrical fire on your hands. If you find scorch marks on any of your outlets, place a childproof cover over them, and contact an electrician as soon as possible. The childproof cover will ensure that no one uses the outlet until it can be repaired.
Don't take chances with your home's electrical system, especially now that you're going to be hosting holiday house guests. If you've noticed any of the issues described above, contact an electrician as soon as possible. A thorough inspection of your electrical system will identify any issues that need to be resolved.
